Sheridan’s Online Reading Platform Simplifies and Improves Reading Experience for Users of AMS Education Earth Science Courses

07/18/2016

Chelsea, MI – Sheridan has expanded its current eCommerce platforms to include online reading.  The American Meteorological Society (AMS) – a current Sheridan eCommerce user who desired a way to sell protected eBooks from its website without the drawbacks that DRM typically brings both publishers and consumerswas the first to commit to Sheridan’s new online reading option and it is now available to all publishers using Sheridan’s eCommerce platforms.

Brian Nordyke, Sheridan eCommerce Manager, remarks “Online reading is an appealing alternate to DRM as it does not require the consumer to download additional software and eliminates the need for support on the publisher side.  All that is required is a phone, tablet, or computer with an internet connection.”

This feature rich reading platform offers enhanced reading experiences not found in leading DRM supported software such as the ability to read from any browser with no additional software needed; the ability to create flashcards and comprehensive study guides; annotation, comment, and pen tools; synced reading to bookmarks, notes, and last page read; and a collaboration tool that allows multiple users who have bought the book to “meet” online and share notes or flashcards.

With online reading, AMS remains in control of the content as purchased titles can only be accessed one session at a time from the purchasers My eLibrary.  The ability to offer time based rentals can be customized to the publisher’s liking.

“We are proud to offer eBooks in a new online reading option we call webBook with the assistance of Sheridan” said Bernard Blair, Education Publications and Instructional Technology Manager at AMS.  “Students and faculty can now access their textbooks and investigation manuals on any internet connected device, from anywhere in the world.  The webBook’s unique features allow a more interactive approach to learning including opportunities to explore real-time, real-world data using the links provided in the course materials.”

“Whether publishers choose to offer online reading as a compliment to their existing downloadable eBooks, or replace their current formats, online reading simplifies both the administration and reader experience” comments Nordyke.
