Grand Rapids, MI—The recent acquisition and installation of a Timsons T-48 ZMR UV web press at Sheridan’s Grand Rapids, MI facility expands this location’s ability to print two-color work in sizes ranging from 3.5” x 5.5” to 8.5” x 11”. The new press will improve Sheridan’s position in the very competitive academic, medical, and scholarly markets that traditionally print two-color large-trim books.
There are multiple advantages to the Timsons T-48 ZMR UV web press. First, with two printing units on the web, it has the ability to print two-color work and utilizes tool-less semi-automatic plate changes and a quick make-ready sequence, which greatly reduces make-ready time.
Second, when functioning in single-color mode, the press lives up to its name—ZMR, or zero-make-ready. Operators can easily replace printing plates without stopping the press—eliminating make-ready time between jobs and minimizing waste.
Finally, the enhanced technology of this T-48 ZMR includes a unique drying technique that offers both environmental and quality benefits. In this process, UV light is used to turn ink from liquid to solid, resulting in faster drying time and less VOCs being released into the air. An added benefit is that the technology greatly reduces the amount of web wave common in most projects printed on a web press.
“We are excited to add this two-color press to our Grand Rapids facility,” remarked Ron Vollink, plant manager for Sheridan’s two Michigan-based book-printing facilities. “Not only will it allow us to offer customers more efficient two-color printing, we also recently installed a single-color Timsons T-32 web press at this facility, and together they increase capacity, which allows us to better serve our customers.”
The ability to print one-, two-, and four-color books uniquely positions Sheridan as a key competitor in print solutions for short to medium runs.
