Take A Tip... Niche Magazine Best Practices!

Niche Media recently asked niche publishers to send in their best ideas and practices that have helped their business. They received more than 500 submissions and discovered that some topics came up again and again. The article, 5 Lessons We Learned from Niche Magazine Publishers, gives an overview of the major themes represented by these submissions. See if any of these stimulate your own resolution-making efforts:

Resolution #1: Learn how to effectively market using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social networks — then do it.
Traditional methods of marketing your magazine are still effective, but they’re not enough. Social interaction helps you determine and meet the needs of your audience. So, in addition to direct mail and mainstream media advertising, throw in some social networking to market your publication and engage readers.

Resolution #2: Get your readers more engaged with your publication and involved in producing great low- or no-cost content.
Readers have a lot to say, so take advantage of user-generated content. Call for and publish reader submissions, short news briefs, and letters to the editor. Feature guest bloggers and profile important people and products in your niche. Your audience also can be a great source of imagery and video, which is becoming increasingly important to a magazine's readership.

Resolution #3: Become familiar with the available ROI tools for measuring social media impact.
User engagement is an important measure of the true return on investment (ROI) of a marketing program. Take advantage of new tools that measure the impact of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and more. Then, make adjustments to your social media marketing programs to get more people talking about you.

Resolution #4: Get some face time with readers and make networking events an important part of your marketing program.
Building relationships with your readers is vital to your magazine's success. It's important to connect with your readers in person whenever possible, and one of the best ways to do that is through networking events. Promote your magazine at branded events. Maximize your exposure and raise awareness of your brand by taking part in partnering events or sponsoring an event. Your readers will be there — and so will your competition.

Resolution #5: Involve your audience in a competition or rewards program.
People love to win. And you can't lose by engaging readers in competitions, puzzles, and awards programs. Whether the competitions are fun, inspirational, or based on just plain luck, readers feel appreciated when the publication rewards them for participating — and they will keep participating for as long as there's a chance to win. So the key is to stretch the duration of the promotion for as long as possible.
