Ready, Set, Shop! – Four Tips to Maximize Online Holiday Book Sales

Online ShoppingThe leaves are falling, the air is chilly, and the holiday shopping season is upon us.  Findings from a 2012 survey by Shop.org show that Books, CDs and DVDs were the second most purchased online gifts on Cyber Monday last year (second only to apparel).  Is your holiday sales and marketing plan in place? Do you have your advertisements and discounts ready to boost your online book sales?

According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, in 2013 the average person plans to do 40% of their holiday shopping online. With retailers opening on Thanksgiving last year, and offering more online discounts prior to Cyber Monday, buyers are in search of gifts for themselves and others earlier than ever before - and they expect to receive a deal on what they purchase.

Here are some tips to help maximize your online book sales this holiday season:

  1. Make a plan – If you haven’t done so already, put your holiday marketing plan in place.  Include a variety of marketing platforms (direct mail, email, print and online advertising) and detail when and how each avenue will be used.
  2. Start early – With stores already rolling out their seasonal displays and shoppers getting a jump on their purchases as early as October you don’t want to be the last one to join the game.
  3. Get the word out – Let people know what you have to offer. Place your ads, use direct mail tactics, send eblasts, or do something as simple as including a line in your newsletter or with your email signature.  If they don’t know what you have, and where to find it, they can’t buy it.
  4. Continue your promotions through December From late shoppers, to holiday travel, to not getting the gift they wanted, there are many reasons consumers continue shopping for bargains and making purchases into the New Year.  Be sure your book is on their radar!
